The current legal situation with using AvPlan as an EFB in flight is somewhat unclear. CAR 233 specifies that the pilot in command must carry the relevant documentation, maps etc for the route to be flown and to any alternates. It does not however actually specify that these must be paper, and various CASA FOI’s interpret this differently.
You will notice that AvPlan is marked ‘Not for use in air navigation’. Consider it as an aid to navigation; the same type of aid as a VFR GPS.
Our recommendation is as follows;
Print out the relevant weather information, ERSA, DAP pages for your flight – AvPlan provides a quick and easy way to do this for your entire plan
Carry current paper maps and have them within reach in the aircraft
CASA are due to publish a CAAP on EFB’s and their use in the near future, which will provide additional clarity on this subject.
